Smashing Magazine Writers Illustrated

IIllustrations created for a Smashing Magazine post about its regular writers.

Smashing Magazine commissioned six illustrations for a post about their regular writers.

Here’s the main one: a composite of all the writers with features from all of them (tattoos, birthmarks, scars, glasses etc.).

These three illustrated what the writers do first thing in the morning: oversleep, check email, Facebook & Twitter and drink coffee.

The last two represent the writers’ strongest quality (love for their job) and worst flaw (disorganization, respecting dealines). Check out James White’s Two Smashing Years poster in the first image! Great poster, I had lots of fun sketching it.

I’m really happy I got to do this. I’m still creating icons but illustrations allow me to explore different styles and subjects and are a testing ground for my personal works.

21 Very Welcome Comments:

  • Great illustration. Really love it. Would love to know what tools you use for these illustrations? and the process as well :)

    • Andrea says:

Thanks. These were drawn in Photoshop using the Brush tool. Simple as that.

      • Thanks Andrea. Do you use tablet ?

      • Andrea says:

Yes, it’s impossible to draw with a mouse. Wacom Intuos 4 Large.

      • Thanks. That’s what I wanted to know :) Am going to buy Wacom Cintiq 21 soon… Would be great if you have any suggestions about it or I should go with some other version ?

      • Andrea says:

I never tried the Cintiq. It’s too expensive and impractical: too big, too many wires.
I’d rather learn to ink with a real brush as it gives you unparalleled line quality no Cintiq can grant you.
The Intuos is better for me: cheaper and perfect for painting. Still, if you have the money for the Cintiq go for it but make sure to try it out first.

      • Thank you so much Andrea. Really appreciate!

    Hi there,

I’ve arrived at your website because of these illustrations you did for Smashing Magazine.

I’ve checked out some other work and I just wanted to say that your work is amazing!
    I really love it!!

    Ben

  • You are really a great man, Do you really know how to design Web Pages, 3D, illustration and logos ?
I’m a web designer, this is my latest UI http://ahmedesign.t35.com/transparent , could u give me an advice about what should I learn and where to focus and how could I be employed by an important company.
    Thanks alot and nice work.

    • Andrea says:

The page doesn’t work that well. I see text overlaying the graphics and a number of other problems. My advice is enroll in a good design school and study the work of others. And never give up!

Does he really have such tattoo? :) It’s cool :-D

  • Great illustrations Andrea, I have never tried to draw such things inside Photoshop.

  • Jeprie says:

I’ve seen some of your other illustrations in SM. The graphics with river. That was cool!
I know you’re going to do another good job.

  • Alex says:

Great illustration Andrea. It’s very cool for photoshop.

  • Great illustration, and also great people behind it. Really nice to see all your reply at every comment :)

    • Andrea says:

Smashing Magazine is really great. They have listened to their readers’ complaints and have all but moved away from lists and roundups. They publish some of the best content out there and they’re great to work with.

    • Andrea says:

Thanks. Actually, you should learn how to paint like you :-) In time you will find your style (I’m still looking for it…)

      • PsdDude says:

:) like you not literally , like you meaning very good , clean , professional ! i agree the style is very important it defines one as an artist !! Thanks for the advice !
